Body Wellness
Stewarding the Temple of God
We are triune beings—spirit, soul, and body. It is through our body that we relate to the world around us. Yet our body is not separate from our soul and spirit—they are designed to be connected.
“… may your entire being – spirit soul, and body – be kept completely flawless in the appearing of our Lord Jesus …” 1 Thessalonians 5:23 TPT
What happens in our soul directly affects the health of our body. Love, joy, and peace create life and health within us, while fear, worry, stress, bitterness, unforgiveness, and guilt can manifest as sickness and imbalance.
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” 1 John 3:1 NKJV
Health Stewardship
Most people associate health only with the body, but true wellness begins in the heart—it is an inside job.
Fitness and nutrition are important, but they are only part of the equation. What happens in your spirit and soul has an impact on your body.
True health and wellness can only be achieved when your soul is aligned with your spirit that is in alignment with the Holy Spirit. This will protect your body.
Combined with fitness and nutrition it will produce a healthy environment for your body.
Stewarding your health includes taking care of your physical body together with the spiritual and soul aspects of wellness.
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19 NKJV
In this “Body Wellness” section, we will look at fitness and nutrition, the natural aspects of stewarding your health, as well as how to partner with God in the process. The ultimate goal is to pursue Divine health (the Kingdom way to health and healing).
The following are some of the other aspects of health stewardship that will primarily be addressed in other sections of the website:
- Cultivating living in God’s rest
- Renewing your mind to the truth of God’s Word
- Meditating on God’s Word, day and night
- Quality sleep
- Relationships with others (living in peace with others)
- Living out God’s calling for your life
- Living the abundant life Jesus promised us
- Recreational activities
- Thankfulness
- Joy
The purpose of this section is not to burden you with long lists of supplements, but to simplify nutrition and exercise by focusing on basics. We use natural, food-based nutrients only to support our journey, as we grow toward the greater reality of living in Divine health.
The goal is to grow in a revelation about Divine health and how to rely on God for health and wellness.
The natural aspects are not to be the focus. Health stewardship is a partnering with God. It is about recognising His voice and making health decisions based on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Each one of us is unique, as our bodies’ requirements.
Even though there are natural laws governing health and wellness, we must remember that we live from a different Kingdom with different principles because of Jesus. That is why having a revelation of Divine health is crucial, because the worldly rules do not apply to us. However, if your mind is not renewed to what God says about health and healing, it will continue to apply.
“And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].”
Romans 12:2 AMP
Health and healing can be pursued on three levels
- Medical care – relying on man, science and pharmakeia.
- Natural health – relying mainly on food, nutrition, and exercise by stewarding your health.
Divine health – relying on God and the finished work of the cross. The ultimate goal is to mature spiritually until you fully trust Him alone as the source of your health, rather than outside interventions.
To prevent condemnation, I want to emphasise that God meets us where we are.
Many Christians would have died too early if it were not for the medical profession. The key is to go to the Lord, no matter where you are in the journey.
Medical care is often more about recovery from sickness than about health care and prevention. We go to the doctor when we are unwell and seeking recovery. This means relying on a doctor and medication to feel better.
Medical intervention is often focused on symptom relief—the pursuit of a quick fix—where a person may choose quick fixes instead of embracing the deeper lifestyle changes and stewardship that lasting health requires.
True responsibility begins when every aspect of your wellbeing is brought under the Lordship of Christ. This may not make sense until you receive a revelation of Divine health in your heart.
If you do consult a doctor, do not feel condemned. The important thing is to trust God according to your level of faith. Begin where you are, and ask the Lord to guide you. If your faith is not yet strong enough to fully trust Him alone with your health, He may even direct you to a doctor—because He knows where you are and desires your healing.
Divine health is a growing process. By following the leading of the Holy Spirit, you can mature to the point of completely relying on God for your health.
If you have not yet received revelation about health God’s way, be wise. Do not simply stop taking medication. Instead, grow in your relationship with the Lord and learn to hear His voice. You will know in your heart when you are ready to make the shift.
Natural health is a preventative approach to health. It is about the things we do to improve our health; for example healthy eating, exercise, relaxation, sleep and rest. This is what I would call health care.
These are all significant aspects of health. God wants us to be good stewards of our bodies. After all, we are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Stewardship indicates a responsibility on our side. It is important, but the focus however, should never be on the things we do.
If we only rely on natural health for healing and not on our Healer, it has the potential to become our focus.
Natural health can be a supportive measure as we grow towards a revelation of Divine health.
It is important to rely on the Holy Spirit when we make adjustments to our lifestyle and stewarding our health.
There are basic principles when it comes to natural health, but at the end of the day, the Lord knows what your body needs.
Divine health is where we rely completely on God for health and healing, based on our identity in Christ.
Health and healing are part of our inheritance—the very reason God sent His Son. Jesus came to save and deliver us from the power of darkness, redeeming us from the curse of the law.
“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”).” Galatians 3:13 NKJV
Divine health says, “I look at Jesus for health and healing.”
It is time for us to mature and step into our “sonship” and take full ownership of our inheritance in the area of health.
This will only happen through spiritual growth and revelation knowledge. Walking in Divine health is a growing process based on revelation.
God’s original intent for us is to walk in Divine health.
